We welcome our general duty under the Equality Act 2010 recognising that the public sector equality duty has three aims that are to:
● eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct under the Act;
● advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not;
● foster good relations between people who have a shared characteristic and those who do not.
At Scartho Infants’ School and Nursery:
● our aim is for all children to reach their full potential;
● we want to make sure that our school is a safe, collaborative and challenging environment for everyone;
● we try to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and respectfully;
● we aim to make sure that no-one experiences less favourable treatment or discrimination because of their age, disability, gender, ethnicity or sexual identity;
● we recognise that people have different needs, and we understand that treating people equally does not always involve treating them the same;
● we recognise that some pupils need extra support to help them to achieve and be successful;
● we try to make sure that people from different groups are consulted and are involved in our decisions, especially children, parents and those of us who can be treated less favourably.
I am... | The cornerstones of being a SCARTHO Citizen are that: | These run through our curriculum to ensure: |
Self-aware | I recognise my strengths and weaknesses. | We value the spiritual and moral development of each person as well as their intellectual and physical growth, showing courtesy and respect towards others beliefs, religions and cultures, accepting that we are all different. |
Caring | I show kindness and concern for others. | We value the importance of each person in our school. We organise our curriculum so that we promote co-operation and understanding between all members of our community. We support our learning, looking after ourselves, each other and the world. |
Articulate | I am a good communicator | We aim to enable each person to have a voice and be successful in our school. |
Respectful | I care that what I say or do affects others. | We value the rights enjoyed by each person in our society. We value the way in which all children are unique and our curriculum promotes respect for the views of each individual child. We understand the need to treat others how we would want to be treated. |
Thoughtful | I think about and consider the people around me. | We value our environment and we aim, through our curriculum, to teach children to take responsibility for our world and how we should care for it for future generations, as well as our own. |
Honest | I am truthful in what I say and do. | We accept each child in our school for who they are and we treat them with fairness and honesty. Our school is a safe place for children to be themselves, trusting that they are: known, heard, accepted and challenged to fly. We take responsibility for the mistakes we make; learning from them and understand that choices have consequences for ourselves, others and/or the environment. |
Organised | I can sort my things so they can be found or used easily. | We value behaviours demonstrating active listening and readiness to learn. Each day is a fresh start so our learning is fun and engaging, enabling us to be the best that we can be. We promote both collaborative and independent learning |
To this end, we have established a set of Equality Objectives that are reviewed on an annual basis and can be found here on the school website.
