Mathematics

Mathematics Intent:

At Scartho Infants’ School and Nursery, our youngest children will begin their early mathematical development supported by excellent early mathematical teaching, which supports the development of early number sense, giving them the foundational skills needed to confidently reason and solve mathematical problems. We intend for all pupils to enjoy a number and vocabulary rich, challenging and supportive maths environment.  We aim to provide a maths curriculum, which is broken down into sequential small steps to allow for rapid progress for all learners using a mastery approach.  We will provide a safe space for children to make mistakes and want all pupils to develop a ‘can do’ attitude.  We will support children to become mathematicians and provide them with the skills they need to proceed confidently.

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life. We believe a high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Mathematics and skills in computing are further developed across the curriculum.

We teach mathematics for mastery, an engaging and accessible style of mathematics teaching, guided by White Rose Maths. Our approach enhances mathematical understanding, enjoyment and achievement for every pupil. Pupils are encouraged to physically represent mathematical concepts. Objects and pictures are used to demonstrate and visualise abstract ideas, alongside numbers and symbols. Mathematical concepts are explored in a variety of representations and problem-solving contexts to give pupils a richer and deeper learning experience.
